Development Update: Monday, January 19
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

GOSSIP GIRL (The CW) - A casting notice has been issued for the show's potential spin-off, which will air as the 24th installment of the parent series this season. In addition to a 16-year-old version of Lily Rhodes, producers are also looking for Carol Rhodes (Lily's older, but less mature, sister), Rick Rhodes (Lily's dad, who "left his wife and family to find freedom running a music company on the West Coast"), Cece Rhodes (Lily's mom, played by Caroline Lagerfelt in "Gossip Girl") and Owen (a "Valley punk guy with a caustic wit").

THE KARENSKYS (CBS) - Annie Potts ("Men in Trees") and Jack Thompson ("Australia") have scored the final principals roles on the comedy pilot, about a woman (Sasha Alexander) who returns to her hometown when her husband's (Mather Zickel) job relocates them and is reunited with her large, eccentric family. They'll play the woman's parents - Pearl, her cheerful and deeply religious mother, and Max, her tough, argumentative and tight-fisted father. Desi Lydic, Tinsley Grimes and Todd Stashwick also star in the Universal Media Studios-based half-hour, which Pamela Fryman is directing from a script by creator Linwood Boomer. Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun also serve as executive producers.

MELROSE PLACE (The CW) - "Smallville" showrunners Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin are reportedly to be in talks to pen the much-ballyhooed "Melrose" revival, Entertainment Weekly reports. Said development comes after a deal with "One Tree Hill" creator Mark Schwahn couldn't be closed due to conflicts with his Warner Bros. Television contract.

THREESOME (ABC, New!) - "The Winner" co-creator Ricky Blitt has scored a put pilot commitment from the Alphabet for a new multi-camera comedy about a guy in his thirties who is caught between his girlfriend - a single mother - and his slacker best friend. No other details, including the studio attached, were released.
