Cbs, CW Set Returning, Freshman Classes
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- CBS has formally renewed five of its "bubble" series while sibling The CW has greenlit three new dramas.

"Cold Case," "NUMB3RS," "The New Adventures of Old Christine," "Rules of Engagement" and "Gary Unmarried" are all set for the 2009-10 season while "Worst Week," "Without a Trace," "Eleventh Hour" and, as previously reported, "The Unit" are out.

"Gary's" renewal comes with new showrunners - Ira Underleider and Rob Des Hotel - at the helm.

The quintet will join a returning class that includes "48 Hours Mystery," "60 Minutes," "Criminal Minds," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "CSI: Miami," "CSI: NY," "Ghost Whisperer," "How I Met Your Mother," "The Mentalist" and "NCIS."

Earlier this year, CBS gave additional seasons to "The Amazing Race," "The Big Bang Theory," "Survivor" and "Two and a Half Men."

Still up in the air: the fate of Canadian import "Flashpoint" as well as a potential acquisition of former NBC drama "Medium," which comes from CBS Television Studios.

Over on The CW, "Melrose Place" and "Vampire Diaries" are a go, as is fellow drama "Beautiful Life."

"Melrose" and "Diaries" had been staffing going into upfront week while "Life" is a new addition.

"Life" centers on a group of models who live together in New York. Ashley Madekwe, Ben Hollingsworth, Mischa Barton, Nico Tortorella and Sara Paxton co-star in the series with Corbin Bleu, Elle Macpherson and Jordan Woolley in recurring roles. Christian Duguay helmed the CBS Television Studios/Katalyst Films-based hour, which was penned by Adam Giaudrone.
