THE CAPE (NBC) - Summer Glau ("Dollhouse") has scored a role on the drama pilot, about a former cop (David Lyons) framed for a crime he didn't commit who becomes The Cape, a masked hero, to clear his name and reunite with his son. She'll play Orwell, an "intrepid investigative blogger who fearlessly goes after corrupt cops and costumed bad guys." Her character is further detailed as "really cute in an intrepid, violent sort of way" and drives a "hot, black, sports car loaded with open laptops." Dorian Missick and James Frain also star in the Universal Media Studios-based hour, to be directed by Simon West from a script by Tom Wheeler.

MILDRED PIERCE (HBO) - Guy Pearce, Evan Rachel Wood, Melissa Leo, James LeGros, Brian F. O'Byrne and Morgan Turner have all joined the cast of the Kate Winslet-led mini-series, based on James M. Cain's novel of the same name. Winslet stars as Mildred Pierce Beragon, "a wife who separates from her unemployed husband, Bert (O'Byrne), and takes a job as a waitress while struggling to earn her daughter Veda's (Wood) love during the Great Depression in middle-class Los Angeles." Pearce then is set as Mildred's lover, "a wealthy playboy," with LeGros as Bert's former business partner, Leo as Mildred's good friend and Morgan Turner as Veda as a child. Todd Haynes ("Far From Heaven") is helming the five-hour project from a script he co-wrote with Jon Raymond. Haynes will also executive produce alongside Pamela Koffler, Christine Vachon and John Wells with Ilene Landress serving as a co-executive producer. Production is set to begin next month in New York.
