(Silver Spring, MD) - As a child in England, Dr. Jane Goodall dreamed of studying animals in their natural environment in Africa. Little did she know that this aspiration would become a reality and grow into a passion that helped her become one of the world's most loved and respected advocates for animals and peace. Today, Dr. Goodall travels the globe 300 days a year speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees and other environmental concerns, as well as her reasons for hope that humankind will solve the problems facing the planet.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at 8 PM (ET/PT), Animal Planet joins Dr. Goodall on an international expedition in the television premiere of JANE'S JOURNEY. During the two-hour special, viewers embark with Dr. Goodall from her childhood home in Bournemouth, England, and travel with her to her second home, Gombe National Park, which is located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. At Gombe, Dr. Goodall's groundbreaking research forever changed the world's perspective of chimpanzees and set her on an unparalleled path. The two-hour special explores Dr. Goodall's life among the chimpanzees and provides exclusive access and unique insight into her love of animals and her drive to empower others to make the world a better place for all living things.

"If we are the most intellectual creature that ever walked on the planet, why are we destroying that planet?" asks Dr. Goodall. "Now is the time for us to do something. We must learn to live in peace and harmony, not only with each other, but with the natural world."

In addition to visiting Gombe, JANE'S JOURNEY takes viewers into America's heartland, to the melting glaciers of Greenland and to other countries of the world as Dr. Goodall interacts with animals and attempts to save our endangered planet for future generations. Dr. Goodall reminds the world that every day is an opportunity to do something positive. She encourages individuals to take action and highlights the work of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) and Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots, the Institute's international program for young people from preschool through university and beyond.

Concurrent with the airing of JANE'S JOURNEY, Animal Planet is partnering with JGI for the network's second annual R.O.A.R. Matching Campaign. During the campaign, Animal Planet will match all donations given to JGI dollar for dollar through October 31, 2012. JGI will use the funds to provide care for the more than 150-orphaned chimpanzees living at the Institute's Tchimpounga sanctuary in the Republic of Congo. The chimpanzees, victims of the illegal commercial bushmeat trade, arrive at Tchimpounga sick, malnourished and traumatized.
