NAT GEO WILD'S "LITTLE GIANT" TAKES YOU INSIDE THE WORLD OF ELEPHANTS LIKE NEVER BEFORE
A Destination Wild Special, Little Giant: A Baby Elephant's Journey,
Premieres This Spring on Nat Geo WILD
(PASADENA, CA. - Jan. 6, 2016) Imagine a baby elephant's view of the herd: a forest of giant legs and trunks, constant elephant chatter, and the unending search for food and water. This intimate view provides a unique opportunity to experience the life of a herd through the stories of individuals: characters with backstories, personalities, quirks and desires. Working on the ground with leading elephant behavior experts and the best natural history filmmakers, Little Giant: A Baby Elephant's Journey takes you into the thick of the action at the herd's big social events - the knock-down fights, emotional reunions and joyful births.
Little Giant is a Destination Wild premiere this spring on Nat Geo WILD and globally in 131 countries and 38 languages on Nat Geo WILD. For more information, visit our press website at www.foxflash.com or follow us on Twitter using @NGC_PR.
"Elephants are one of the most iconic, majestic and emotional animals on the planet, and now we're making you one of the herd with a groundbreaking intimate view into their lives," said Geoff Daniels, executive vice president and general manager, Nat Geo WILD. "Definitive and emotional, this blue-chip program uses the latest technology to immerse us in the lives of these fascinating elephants and really understand their personalities and characters."
Little Giant follows an elephant calf called "Little E" who is born into a family trying to survive in one of Kenya's most iconic landscapes - the Maasai Mara. Unfortunately for the herd, drought is setting in, and the family is forced to keep on the move in search of food and water. Lions, hippos and even humans interrupt their quest, but each challenge is overcome with thoughtful purpose and, at times, surprising humor. By the time their journey ends, their actions testify not only to an intelligent and loving nature that rivals our own, but also to a message we can all relate to: there's nothing quite like family.
Little Giant is the brainchild of award-winning wildlife cinematographer Bob Poole, who recently shot National Geographic Channel's acclaimed War Elephants film about aggressive elephants traumatized in Mozambique's civil war. He collaborated with his sister, Dr. Joyce Poole, on both films. She is one of the world's leading experts in elephant behavior and was instrumental in finding Little E and helping the crew interpret elephant behavior as it unfolded.
"Little Giant was a family effort on two fronts," said cinematographer Bob Poole. "Our goal was to paint a portrait of elephant family life, and that meant getting to know individuals. Because we had to find and follow our family group each day, my sister's uncanny ability to spot and ID elephants from a distance was a huge asset. In postproduction, Joyce acted as scientific adviser and worked with the editor and writer to make the story of Little Giant factual, interesting and entertaining."
Little Giant: A Baby Elephant's Journey is produced by Off the Fence for Nat Geo WILD. For Off the Fence, executive producers are Ellen Windemuth and Emre Izat.
