ROADSIDE PICNIC (WGN America) - The network has passed on the drama pilot, which "explores a near-future world where aliens have come and gone, leaving humankind to explore the wondrous and dangerous mysteries left behind." Producer Sony Pictures Television is already is shopping it to other outlets. (Deadline.com)
SON, THE (AMC) - Writer/producer Daniel C. Connolly has inked an overall deal with the network where he'll develop new series projects. (Deadline.com)
START UP (ABC) - The Zach Braff-led comedy - about "when a guy in his mid-30s with a wife and two kids makes the crazy decision to quit his good job and dive into the brave new world of starting a business" - has received a pilot order from the Alphabet. Braff will also direct from a script by Matt Tarses which in turn is based on Alex Blumberg's podcast of the same name. Sony Pictures Television-based Davis Entertainment's John Davis and John Fox as well as Gimlet Media's Blumberg, Chris Giliberti and Matt Lieber are likewise executive producing. (Deadline.com)
UNTITLED CITY MAYOR PROJECT (ABC) - Jeremy Bronson's single-camera comedy - about "a struggling hip-hop artist who runs for mayor to promote his mixtape - and wins" - is likewise heading to pilot at the network. Jamie Tarses, Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark of Bluegrass FanFare will also executive produce alongside director James Griffiths and Daveed Diggs for ABC Studios. Diggs however is not attached to star. UNTITLED MARVEL ACTION-ADVENTURE SERIES (FOX) - Bryan Singer is closed to direct and executive produce the pilot, about two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive. He'll work from a script by Matt Nix. Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory also executive produce.
WHAT ABOUT BARB? (NBC, New!) - Joe Port and Joe Wiseman have scored a pilot order for a small screen take on the 1991 feature, about "a psychiatric patient (Bill Murray) who joins his psychiatrist, Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss), and his family on vacation." The TV incarnation however will swap the genders of both characters, revolving around "a psychotherapist who tries to cut ties with her most overbearing patient but is unsuccessful and gains an annoying family member in the process." The single-camera project comes from ABC Studios. (Deadline.com)
