ALIENIST, THE (TNT) - Melanie Field and Rosy McEwen have both been cast in the franchise's second installment, "The Angel of Darkness." The former is set as Bitsy Sussman, "an industrious young protege at the Sara Howard Detective Agency who looks to Sara (Dakota Fanning) for professional guidance but who brings her own warmth and New York street smarts to the job." And the latter will recur as Libby Hatch, "a sensitive young nurse and would-be whistleblower who befriends Sara." (Deadline.com)
GOOD LORD BIRD, THE (Showtime) - Joshua Johnson-Lionel has been cast opposite Ethan Hawke in the period limited series, about Onion (Johnson-Lionel), an enslaved teenager who becomes a member in John Brown's (Hawke) motley family during the time of Bleeding Kansas, eventually participating in the famous 1859 raid on the Army depot at Harpers Ferry. Brown's raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended, but was the instigating event that started the Civil War. (Deadline.com)
MIXED-ISH/UNRELATED (ABC/Freeform) - Randall Winston has signed a two-year overall deal at ABC Studios, home to both upcoming series. The pact covers his duties as an executive producer on the former and a co-executive producer on the latter. He'll also develop new series projects. (Deadline.com)
SPEAKS THE NIGHTBIRD (FX, New!) - Stephen Susco (The Grudge) is looking to bring Robert McCammon's horror novel - which "tells the dark and chilling tale about a witch-hunt in the seventeenth century Carolina colonies" - to the small screen. The Wolper Organization's Mark Wolper; The Traveling Picture Show Company's Kevin Matusow; and Shay Prentice and Kevin Nicklaus are also among the executive producers. (Deadline.com)
SUITS (USA) - Patrick J. Adams's Mike Ross has booked a return trip for the show's final season. He'll appear in the fifth episode of the ninth season and is expected to likewise drop by the final episode. (Deadline.com)
