CHI, THE (Showtime) - Cory Hardrict, Joel Steingold and Salvador Chacon are all slated to recur on the show's third season. Hardrict will play Dante, "an independent rapper whose taste in women is as selective as the strain of cannabis he buys and producers he works with." Steingold then is Martin St. John, "a Hedge Fund manager with his eyes and cents on the Chicago political landscape, and father of the new love interest of Kevin (Alex Hibbert)." And Chacon will play Tomas Gutierrez, "a nurse who works alongside Jada (Yolonda Ross) whose view of his native Chicago and the people in it is influenced by his cultural heritage." (Deadline.com)
GENIUS (NGC) - David Cross has been cast as music producer Jerry Wexler in the anthology's third installment, which will focus on music legend Aretha Franklin (played by Cynthia Erivo). (Variety.com)
KILLING ZAC EFRON (Quibi, New!) - Zac Efron is set to front a new adventure series at the streaming service in which he "ventures deep into the jungles of a remote, dangerous island to carve his own name in expedition history." Efron, Jason Barrett and Michael Simkin of Ninjas Runnin' Wild and Chris Collins and Lydia Tenaglia of Zero Point Zero are the executive producers. (Deadline.com)
LISEY'S STORY (Apple TV+) - Joan Allen is the latest addition to the eight-hour limited series as Amanda, "the oldest of Lisey's (Julianne Moore) sisters." (Deadline.com)
OUTER BEAUTY (NBC, New!) - Erica Oyama has sold a potential comedy to the network. No specifics were given about the project beyond it is set up at Nahnatchka Khan's Universal Television-based Fierce Baby Productions. (Deadline.com)
SWIMMING WITH SHARKS (Quibi, New!) - Writer Kathleen Robertson and director Tucker Gates are spearheading a contemporary update of the 1994 movie about "a young female assistant who is at the center of a studio filled with manipulators, schemers and intrigue." Production will begin in February on the Lionsgate Television-based project, with Robertson, Dana Brunetti, Liz Destro, Jay Cohen and Stephen Israel executive producing and Chris Cowles producing. Robertson was also behind a 2016 effort to bring the project to the small screen at E!. (Deadline.com)
VALLEY TRASH (ABC, New!) - Niki Schwartz-Wright has scored a put pilot commitment from the Alphabet for a single-camera comedy in which "when 14-year-old Abby gets accepted to a prestigious private L.A. high school, neither she nor her hard-working, financially strapped parents are prepared for the culture shock they're about to experience when Abby is thrust into a world occupied by a bunch of brilliant, snobby, rich kids who want nothing to do with her, her family or their 818 area code." Fierce Baby Productions' Nahnatchka Khan will also executive produce for Universal Television. (Deadline.com)
