Our 20-year-old protagonist, Violet Sorrengail, expected to live a quiet life among books and history. But she's put on an entirely different path when her tough-as-talons general of a mother orders her to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. If the fire-breathing beasts don't kill her, one of her fellow riders just might." Outlier Society's Michael B. Jordan is attached to executive produce the project, an adaptation of the first book, as are Yarros and Liz Pelletier of Entangled Publishing. (Deadline.com, 10/30)
HBO/MAX ORIGINAL SERIES (HBO/Max) - Casey Bloys, the chairman of HBO, gave target dates for various original series during a press event in New York on Thursday: "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (February 2024), "Dune: Prophecy" (formerly "Dune: The Sisterhood," Fall 2024), "Euphoria" (TBA 2025), "The Franchise" (TBA 2024), "Hacks" (Spring 2024), "House of the Dragon" (early summer 2024), "Industry" (Summer 2024), "Jerrod" (Spring 2024), "The Jinx" (Spring 2024), "The Last of Us" (TBA 2025), "My Brilliant Friend" (Summer 2024), "The Penguin" (Mid-to-Late 2024), "Pretty Little Liars: Summer School" (formerly, "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin," Spring 2024), "The Regime" (Spring 2024), "The Sex Lives of College Girls" (Spring 2024), "The Sympathizer" (Spring 2024), "Tokyo Vice" (Spring 2024), "True Detective" (January 14, as previously announced), "Welcome to Derry" (TBA 2025) and "The White Lotus" (TBA 2025). (Variety.com, 11/2)
JOE PICKETT (Paramount+) - The streamer has canceled the series after two seasons. (Variety.com, 10/31)
JUDY JUSTICE (Freevee) - Scott Koondel's Sox Entertainment is slated to offer Judy Sheindlin's court series to local TV stations for a fall 2024 launch in syndication. (Deadline.com, 10/31)
POLTERGEIST (Amazon, New!) - Amazon MGM Studios is in early development on a TV series version of the horror film franchise. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce for Amblin Television. No writing or directing auspices were given. (Variety.com, 10/30)
PRISON BREAK (REBOOT SERIES) (Hulu, New!) - Elgin James is spearheading a new incarnation of the former FOX staple. No details were given other than it is not expected to focus on the characters from the original series. Paul Scheuring, Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz are also slated to executive produce for James's 20th Television-based Sierra Drive banner. (Deadline.com, 11/2)
ROLLER JAM (UNTITLED ROLLER DANCING COMPETITION SERIES) (Max) - Magnolia Network previously announced series, due in 2024, has been detailed as "the top roller-skating crews in the country compete to see who will be crowned America's best roller dancing team." (Variety.com, 11/2)
SECOND CHANCE STAGE (Max, New!) - Magnolia Network has landed "a talent competition that offers contestants who have pushed their dreams aside a second chance at their big break" at the streamer for 2024. (Variety.com, 11/2)
SESAME STREET (Max) - The show's 56th season, due in 2025, will feature a creative overhaul: the series will "drop the "magazine"-style format it has long used in favor of two longer, more narrative-driven segments, which will be paired with a new animated series, Tales From 123. The new format will feature two 11-minute story segments, with the new animated series sandwiched in between them." (THR.com, 10/30)
UNDERDOG, THE (NBC, New!) - The network is developing a domestic take on STV Studios' game show format "that sees social media influencers compete in a popularity contest alongside one person without an online following." The company's Josephine Brassey will presumably executive produce for Universal Television Alternative Studios. (Deadline.com, 11/1)
UNTITLED ROMANTIC DRAMA (Starz) - The Joshua Jackson/Lauren Ridloff-led series from Ava DuVernay, which was given a script-to-series commitment for three seasons back in May of 2022, is no longer moving forward at the pay channel. Filming had begun "in Wilmington, N.C., in March but was paused in May due to the WGA strike." It's not clear how much had been completed of the project and/or if producer Warner Bros. Television plans to shop it elsewhere. The report adds, "Starz decided not to move forward with the series following DuVernay's decision to walk away after her overall deal with Warner Bros. TV came to an end in May." (Variety.com, 11/2)
WELLMANIA (Netflix) - Star Celeste Barber took to social media with the news Netflix has canceled the series after one season. (@celestebarber, 10/30)
YELLOWSTONE (Paramount Network) - The show's final episodes are now targeted to premiere on Paramount Network in November 2024. (Deadline.com, 11/2)
