Netflix Premieres 'Who Killed the Banker's Widow?' on December 4
Netflix announces that Who Killed the Banker's Widow?, a new documentary retracing the murder of María del Carmen Martínez, widow of the former president of Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo (CAM), will premiere on December 4. Nearly a decade later, the crime remains shrouded in mystery.
The documentary revisits a murder that shook one of Spain's wealthiest families and brought to light a complex web of family disputes, secrets and financial interests. Through the investigation conducted by journalists Braulio García Jaén and Bárbara Ayuso, creators of the El enemigo podcast for EL PAÍS Audio, the production retraces the events, examines conflicting accounts and explores the contradictions and unanswered questions that shaped the police and judicial investigations.
Produced by LACOproductora, part of PRISA Media, and directed by Maxi González (En primicia), the documentary draws on the journalists' work, with both also contributing to the narration. It features a range of testimonies and explores new investigative leads uncovered by the journalists, offering other perspective on the case. An investigation that goes beyond the crime itself to challenge the assumptions surrounding it and delve deeper into a search for the truth that, nearly a decade later, remains ongoing.
Synopsis:
When a prominent banker dies, his wife inherits the powerful golden share, granting her control over key decisions within the family business empire. Five years later, the widow is found murdered, shot twice in the head, while collecting her Porsche from the dealership run by her son-in-law.
The crime exposes deep-rooted rivalries within the company's leadership, a family divided into two opposing camps, and one unanswered question: Who killed the banker's wife?
