Sunday Primetime (7:00-11:00 p.m.)
Despite competing against NBC's "NFL Sunday Night Football" on the night and CBS with its high-rated NFL overrun into the first hour of primetime, ABC emerged as the No. 1 network on the opening Sunday of the season in Total Viewers (13.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (5.0/13). In viewers and young adults, ABC delivered its strongest Sunday numbers in 7 months since 2/25 and 3/4/07, respectively.
ABC's fourth season premiere of "Desperate Housewives" stood as the definitive No. 1 TV program on the first Sunday of the season in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. In fact ABC aired the Top 3 entertainment programs on Sunday in the key Adult 18-49 sales demographic, with "Desperate Housewives," "Brothers & Sisters" & "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," respectively.
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition 9/30" (7:00-8:00 p.m.)
A special 7 o'clock installment of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" placed a solid second to CBS' football overrun in the hour among Total Viewers (9.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.9/9).
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
In its regular time period premiere, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" was the most-watched TV show during the 8 o'clock hour (14.0 million), outdrawing NBC's NFL coverage (approx. 12.5 million in the preliminary time period based "fast affiliate" numbers). "Home Edition" dominated its non-sports competition in the time period among Adults 18-49, beating Fox's "The Simpsons"/"King of the Hill" combo by 24% (4.7/12 vs. 3.8/10).
"Home Edition" turned in its best viewer and young adult results since March (since 3/11/07) and paced well ahead of its 2007 May Sweep averages (Live + Same Day 11.4 million & 4.2/12) in both Total Viewers (+2.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (+12%).
"Desperate Housewives" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
The fourth season premiere of ABC's "Desperate Housewives" overshadowed its competition in the 9 o'clock hour with an average audience of 19.0 million viewers and a 7.4 rating, 17 share in Adults 18-49, beating CBS' "Cold Case" and NBC's "Sunday Night Football" by wide margins in the hour.
"Desperate Housewives" drew its largest audience and matched its top Adult 18-49 rating since last November (since 11/26/06) and ran ahead of where it left off last season. "Desperate Housewives" was up over its 2007 May Sweep performance in the hour by 1.7 million viewers and by 10% in Adults 18-49 (May Sweep Live + Same Day = 17.3 million viewers and 6.7/17 in Adults 18-49).
"Brothers & Sisters" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC's second season premiere of "Brothers & Sisters" was the most-watched show in the 10 o'clock hour (13.3 million), outrunning NBC's NFL coverage. The ABC drama towered over its CBS drama competition, leading "Shark" by almost 2 million viewers (13.3 million vs. 11.4 million) and by 89% in Adults 18-49 (5.1/13 vs. 2.7/7).
Like its lead-in, "Brothers & Sisters" saw its best performance since November in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 since 11/5/06 and 11/19/06, respectively. The second season opener of "Brothers & Sisters" grew from the series' performance during the '07 May Sweep by 1.8 million viewers and by 19% in Adults 18-49 (May Sweep Live + Same Day = 11.5 million viewers and 4.3/11 in Adults 18-49).
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year to year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has more than doubled from 8.5% during premiere week 2006 up to 19.5% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. Therefore, the only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
