With its Strongest Results in 9 Months, ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" Overshadows its CBS Unscripted Time Period Competition, "Amazing Race XII"

Sunday's No. 1 TV Series for the Seventh Week Running, "Desperate Housewives" is No. 1 at 9pm in Viewers and Young Adults, Dominating CBS' Competing "Cold Case"

Defeating CBS' "Shark" in Viewers and Young Adults During the 10pm Hour, ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" Grows its Adult 18-49 Audience Week to Week

Sunday Primetime (7:00-11:00 p.m.)

ABC was competitive for the top network position on Sunday night in Total Viewers (13.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (4.9/12), pacing on par among young adults with NBC and its "Sunday Night Football" (Indianapolis-San Diego) coverage (12.6 million & 4.9/12 based on Nielsen's preliminary primetime "fast affiliate" averages) and an NFL (Dallas-NY Giants) primetime overrun-boosted Fox (10.7 million & 4.9/12 based on Nielsen's preliminary primetime "fast affiliate" averages). CBS ran a distant fourth on the night in Adults 18-49 (2.8/7), more than 2 whole rating points behind the other nets during prime. For the seventh straight Sunday, ABC ranked a definitive No. 1 on the evening across the key women demographics: W18-34 (5.0/14), W18-49 (6.4/16) and W25-54 (7.3/17).

For the 7th consecutive Sunday this season, ABC's "Desperate Housewives" qualified the night's No. 1 TV show in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

The most-watched TV show overall during the 8 o'clock hour, ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" dominated its unscripted competition in the time period, beating CBS' "Amazing Race XII" by 4.6 million viewers (15.1 million vs. 10.5 million) and by 71% in Adults 18-49 (5.3/13 vs. 3.1/8).

"Home Edition" drew its biggest audience and tied its highest Adult 18-49 rating in 9 months since 2/11/07 and 2/18/07, respectively.

"Desperate Housewives" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

Sunday's No. 1 TV series for the 7th week in a row, ABC's "Desperate Housewives" dominated the 9 o'clock hour, ahead of NBC's NFL coverage, among Total Viewers (18.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (7.2/16). "Desperate Housewives" overshadowed its drama competition in the time slot, "Cold Case," topping the CBS series by 5.6 million viewers and by 140% in Adults 18-49 (12.9 million & 3.0/7).

"Desperate Housewives" was up week to week among Adults 18-49 (7.2/16 vs. 7.0/16).

"Brothers & Sisters" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" outdelivered its drama competition during Sunday's 10 o'clock hour, CBS' "Shark," by 1.0 million viewers (12.5 million vs. 11.5 million) and by 92% in Adults 18-49 (5.0/13 vs. 2.6/7). The ABC sophomore drama won the hour, beating NBC's NFL coverage, across each of the key women demographics: W18-34 (5.3/15), W18-49 (6.9/17) and W25-54 (8.0/18).

"Brothers & Sisters" grew its Adult 18-49 audience week to week (5.0/13 vs. 4.6/12).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year to year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has more than doubled from approximately 9% during the same point in 2006 up to nearly 21% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. Therefore, the only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
