WEEK No. 20:

During the week of February 2, 2009, ABC outpaced NBC by strong margins in Total Viewers (+11% - 7.8 million vs. 7.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+22% - 2.8/8 vs. 2.3/6) and finished No. 2 to Fox for the week among Adults 18-34, beating out a "Grammy"-boosted CBS by 9% (2.5/8 vs. 2.3/7). The Net also held second to Fox for the week among Women 18-34 (3.3/9) and Women 18-49 (3.7/9-tie).

ABC's delivery surged from the prior week by 2.0 million viewers (7.8 million vs. 5.8 million) and by 33% in Adults 18-49 (2.8/8 vs. 2.1/5). ABC's audience is growing in 2009, posting across-the-board gains in Total Viewers and key Adults over the same point in 2008 (5 weeks vs. 5 weeks): Total Viewers +3% (7.6 million vs. 7.4 million), Adults 18-34 +20% (2.4/7 vs. 2.0/6), Adults 18-49 + 8% (2.7/7 vs. 2.5/6) and Adults 25-54 +3% (3.1/7 vs. 3.0/7).

Rankings: ABC aired 4 of the week's Top 10 TV shows in Adults 18-49, including the No. 1 scripted program with "Grey's Anatomy" and the No. 1 10 o'clock series on any night with "Private Practice": "Grey's Anatomy" No. 4 (No. 1 scripted series), "Private Practice" No. 7 (No. 1 10 o'clock show), "Desperate Housewives" No. 9 and "Lost" No. 10. ABC's "The Bachelor," which is delivering the franchise's best results in years (best in 5 years in Total Viewers and in 3 years in Adults 18-49), finished No. 15 for the week in Adults 18-49, No. 12 in Adults 18-34 and No. 6 in Women 18-34.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 29% currently, from 22% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Improving on the prior week's numbers in both viewers (9.6 million vs. 9.4 million) and young adults (3.7/9 vs. 3.6/9) for the 3rd consecutive week, ABC's Monday lineup hit its highest Adults 18-49 performance since premiere Monday nearly 5 months ago since 9/22/08. Additionally, the Net delivered in its strongest Monday ratings in Adults 18-34 (3.7/9) and Women 18-34 (5.3/13) in 10 months since 3/17/08. ABC won the night among Women 18-34 (5.3/13) and Women 18-49 (5.4/12), taking the No. 1 position on the night among Women 18-34 for the 5th week running and the top spot among Women 18-49 for the 4th time in the last 5 weeks.

"The Bachelor" (8:00-10:00 p.m.)

Opposite all-original programming on the broadcast networks, including the return of NBC's "Heroes," ABC's "The Bachelor" hit season highs in both Total Viewers (11.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (4.1/10), building on the previous week's telecast for the 4th straight week. In fact, "The Bachelor" has built on the previous week's performance on every telecast since its season premiere. In addition, "The Bachelor" attracted its largest non-finale audience in over 4-1/2 years and strongest Adults 18-49 rating in nearly 3 years since 5/12/04 and 2/13/06, respectively.

"The Bachelor" won its 8:00 10:00 p.m. time period in Adults 18-34 (4.1/10) for the first time this season, topping comedies on CBS and dramas on Fox and NBC. The unscripted series led the time-slot across all key Women demos for the second week in a row: Women 18-34 (6.0/14), Women 18-49 (6.0/13) and Women 25-54 (6.0/13).

"True Beauty" took second in the hour in the key young adult sales demo to CBS' "C.S.I.: Miami," while leading the 10 o'clock hour among Women 18-34 (3.8/10). "True Beauty" has won its hour among Women 18-34 in all 5 of its airings.

"True Beauty" outperformed the season premiere of NBC's "Medium" among Adults 18-49 (3.0/8 vs. 2.9/7) and Adults 18-34 (2.8/8 vs. 2.0/5).

"Homeland Security USA" delivered viewers and young adults growth for ABC in the hour on all 4 of its telecasts to date.

ABC took second place on Wednesday in Adults 18-49 (2.8/7) to an "American Idol"-driven Fox, besting NBC and CBS in a third-place tie by 47% (1.9/5).

ABC's Wednesday results were up from the same night last year (2/6/08) by nearly 1 million viewers (7.2 million vs. 6.4 million) and by 12% in Adults 18-49 (2.8/7 vs. 2.5/6)

"Lost" (9:00-10:02 p.m.)

Continuing to exhibit its appointment-television status, "Lost" catapulted from its lead-in by 6.3 million viewers and by 176% in young adults to hold the No. 1 position in the 9 o'clock hour among Adults 18-49 (tied w/ "Lie to Me") and register as Wednesday's No. 1 scripted TV show for the 3rd straight week in the key young adult sales demo. Week to week "Lost" retained nearly all of its Total Viewers (98% - 11.0 million vs. 11.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (96% - 4.7/12 vs. 4.9/12), while growing from the prior week in both Women 18-34 (4.8/12 vs. 4.4/11) and Women 18-49 (5.1/12 vs. 5.0/11).

During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Life on Mars" ranked No. 2 among Adults 18-49 (2.0/5) and delivered the No. 1 position against its drama competition in the slot on CBS ("C.S.I.: NY") and NBC ("Law & Order") with Adults 18-34 (1.7/5-tie) and Women 18-34 (2.0/6).

"Life on Mars" was up from its week-earlier time period premiere by 21% in Adults 18-34 (1.7/5 vs. 1.4/4). Among Men 18-34 (1.5/5), "Life on Mars" delivered its highest rating since its October series debut (10/9/08), while matching ABC's best number this season in the time slot with regularly scheduled series programming.

ABC turned in a dominant first-place victory on Thursday evening, winning the night in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. ABC beat out its closest Thursday competition (Fox) by 2.5 million viewers (11.8 million vs. 9.3 million) and by 36% in Adults 18-49 (4.5/12 vs. 3.3/9).

It was "Grey's" 8th time in the last 9 original telecasts to rank as Thursday's No. 1 entertainment show in Adults 18-49 and the 8th time in as many telecasts in Adults 18-34.

"Grey's" marked its highest Adult 18-49 rating in 11 weeks and largest overall audience since early December since 11/20/08 and since 12/4/08, respectively.

In addition, the ABC sophomore drama logged its 5th week in a row as the No. 1 entertainment show in its slot in Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34.

Posting season highs for the 2nd time in 3 telecasts, "Private Practice" also achieved the series' highest ratings ever in Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34, while drawing the series' second-largest-ever Total Viewer count.
