In its Season Opener, "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" Takes Second to Fox's "Dance" in Adults 18-49 and is No. 1 with Men 18-49 and Men 25-54

"I Survived a Japanese Game Show" Improves its "Wipeout" Retention Over Last Summer, While Boosting ABC's Numbers in the Time Slot Year to Year

Wednesday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)

ABC earned second place to Fox on Wednesday night, with a 2-hour installment of "So You Think You Can Dance," across the Adult demos: AD18-34 (1.7/6), AD18-49 (2.0/6) and AD25-54 (2.3/6). The Net finished No. 1 on the evening among Men 18-49 (1.9/6-tie).

ABC's Wednesday results were up from the same night last summer (6/18/08) by 1.4 million viewers (5.8 million vs. 4.4 million) and by 18% in Adults 18-49 (2.0/6 vs. 1.7/5).

"Wipeout" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

For the 2nd time in 3 telecasts, ABC's "Wipeout" (8.0 million) emerged as the most-watched TV show in the 8 o'clock hour, outdrawing original competition including Fox's hit summer series and time-period veteran, "So You Think You Can Dance" (7.9 million). Defeating its NBC unscripted competition head to head by the widest margins yet, "Wipeout" topped "I'm a Celebrity.Get Me Out of Here" by 3.8 million viewers (8.0 million vs. 4.2 million) and by 73% in Adults 18-49 (2.6/9 vs. 1.5/5).

For the 4th week in a row, the ABC unscripted series finished No. 1 in its time slot across all key Men demos (M18-34 2.0/8, M18-49 2.6/9 and M25-54 3.0/10), registering as Wednesday's No. 1 TV show among Men for the 3rd consecutive week.

"Wipeout" grew its numbers in the 8 o'clock hour week to week among Adults 18-34 (+10% - 2.2/8 vs. 2.0/7), Adults 25-54 (+3% - 3.0/9 vs. 2.9/9), while retaining 100% of its Adult 18-49 audience from the prior week.

"I Survived a Japanese Game Show" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

Moving to a new night (shifting from Tuesdays last summer) opposite established unscripted series during the 9 o'clock hour, including Fox's second hour of its 2-hour "So You Think You Can Dance," ABC's "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" delivered a second-place finish in Adults 18-49 (2.1/6) and ranked No. 1 with Men 18-49 (2.0/6-tie) and Men 25-54 (2.4/7). In fact it was the evening's No. 2 TV show, behind only "Wipeout," in both Men demos.

"I Survived a Japanese Game Show" improved the hour for ABC over the year-ago night (6/18/08) by 1.1 million viewers (5.4 million vs. 4.3 million) and by 24% in Adults 18-49 (2.1/6 vs. 1.7/5).

Compared to its averages last summer coming out of "Wipeout," "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" substantially increased its young adult retention to 81% in Adults 18-49 and to 86% in Adults 18-34, up from 66% and 72% in Summer 08, respectively.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 32% currently, from 25% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
