2013 Fall Classic Is Highest Rated Since 2009 & +12% Over 2012
Boston, MA - Behind another terrific pitching performance from ace Jon Lester and the big bat of David Ortiz, the Boston Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 last night in Game 5 of the 2013 World Series, taking a commanding 3-2 lead in the best of seven series and delivering FOX another prime-time victory. Last night's broadcast delivered a 8.9/14 national household rating with 14.4 million viewers, according to fast nationals from Nielsen Media Research. The rating for Monday night's Game 5 increased +1% over 2011's World Series Game 5 (8.8/14; 14.3 million viewers), and is the highest-rated Game 5 since 2009. FOX's prime-time average, 8.9/14, mirrored the game rating and exceeded the other major broadcast networks for the fifth time during the Series (ABC, 8.0/12; NBC, 7.4/11 and CBS, 4.3/7).
Through five games, the 2013 World Series on FOX is averaging an 8.5/14 and 14.1 million viewers, +12% over last year's World Series (7.6/12, 12.7 million viewers), and ranks as the highest-rated World Series since the New York Yankees met the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009.
Last night's broadcast peaked at an 11.7/19 and 18.8 million viewers at 11:00 PM ET as Red Sox reliever Koji Uehara shut down the Cardinals in the ninth.
St. Louis posted an impressive 43.8/61 to lead all markets, with Boston next (38.5/56) followed by Providence (32.1/45), Hartford (20.8/30), Kansas City (13.5/21), Memphis (12.4/17), Richmond (12.4/17), Fort Myers (12.2/18), Tampa (11.7/17) and Salt Lake City (11.2/20).
According to figures released by Nielsen SocialGuide, FOX was the No. 1 most social TV network on Monday, driven by the World Series. Twitter activity for last night's World Series Game 5 saw impressive increases over 2011. The game drew over 485,000 tweets (up 407% from 2011 World Series Game 5) from more than 232,000 unique authors (up 288%). According to Facebook, World Series Game 5 generated 3.7 million interactions from 2.1 million users. The Red Sox won the team buzz battle, generating 68% of the comments, likes, and posts during the game.
