HBO MAX UNVEILS OFFICIAL TRAILER FOR HBO ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY SERIES "THE KILLING OF THE GOLDEN ROOSTER" DEBUTING NOVEMBER 12
Featuring firsthand accounts and archival footage, the documentary series, premiering November 12, traces the life of Mexican musician Valentín Elizalde, from his early years and rise to musical stardom to his final hours, while exploring the theories and unanswered questions surrounding his death.
Mexico City, November 5, 2026 - HBO Max has released the official trailer for THE KILLING OF THE GOLDEN ROOSTER, a new HBO Original documentary series set to premiere globally on November 12, ahead of the 20th anniversary of the death of Valentín Elizalde, one of the most celebrated artists in regional Mexican music. All three episodes will be available on HBO Max beginning November 12.
On November 25, 2006, Valentín Elizalde, known as "El Gallo de Oro" (The Golden Rooster), was murdered at age 27 following a concert in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. His death shocked the country, leaving behind questions that remain unanswered nearly two decades later, even as his musical legacy continues to resonate with generations of fans.
THE KILLING OF THE GOLDEN ROOSTER revisits the singer's final hours and examines the theories surrounding his murder, from a forbidden romance and possible ties to organized crime to suspicions of betrayal within his inner circle. Drawing on archival footage, investigative research, and firsthand accounts, the three-part documentary series takes a closer look at the circumstances of his death.
The documentary features interviews with Fausto "Tano" Castro Elizalde, Valentín's cousin and the sole survivor of the attack; Gabriela Sabag, his former wife; Gabriela Elizalde, his daughter; Alejandro Lira, a songwriter and close friend; Héctor López, his manager; Grammy Award winner Carín León; and journalists Mónica Noguera and Tere Aguilera. Together, they offer different perspectives on the singer's life, the events leading up to his murder, and his lasting influence on popular culture.
Beyond the crime itself, the documentary explores the social landscape of Valentín Elizalde's life and the complex relationship between regional Mexican music, violence, and organized crime. The series offers insight into a broader phenomenon that extends beyond the singer's story and remains relevant today.
VALENTÍN: LA MUERTE DEL GALLO DE ORO is an HBO Original documentary series directed by Ida Cuellar. Executive producers include Alejandro Sugich and Julieta Perales for Sula Entertainment; Érica Sánchez and Fernando Rovzar for Lemon Studios; and Mariano César, Sergio Nakasone, and Cecilia Abraham for HBO.
