New York, NY � August 9, 2005 � MTV: Music Television today announced that international sensation Shakira and the multi-faceted hip-hop star Ludacris will perform on the �2005 MTV Video Music Awards.� Hosted by Diddy, the 2005 VMAs will broadcast live from AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami, FL on Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 8:00PM (LIVE ET/Tape Delayed PT). Shakira and Ludacris join a list of previously announced performers including Mariah Carey, the Killers, Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson, and Green Day.
�The line-up of performers for the 2005 VMAs will be the most diverse, star-studded musical experience of the year,� said Christina Norman, President, MTV. �The addition of the Shakira and Ludacris as performers will help take this year�s show to the next level in terms of talent, spectacle, and excitement.�
It was also announced today that the 2005 VMAs will include appearances by some of the biggest names in showbiz including Usher, Jessica Alba, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Lindsay Lohan, Joss Stone, Jeremy Piven, and Snoop Dogg. More appearances and performers will be announced in the coming days and weeks leading up to the August 28th live broadcast.
Shakira is nominated this year in the Best Female and Best Dance Video categories for �La Tortura,� which along with Daddy Yankee�s �Gasolina� is the first ever all Spanish language video to be nominated for a VMA. This is the first time an artist will perform in Spanish on the VMA�s.
Shakira's spanish-langauge album "Fijacion Oral Volume 1" has sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide since it's release in June, breaking records along the way. In the US, the album enjoyed the biggest single week sales for a Spanish language album in the history of Soundscan. Around the world �Fijacion Oral� has been a #1 album in Germany, Spain, Central America, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Venzuela.
The single "La Tortura" has been a genre-busting sensation in the US, getting airplay on the country�s biggest English dominated Top 40 radio stations while maintaining the #1 slot on the Latin Airplay charts for an astonishing 9 weeks.
