AMERICAN TABLOID (HBO, New!) - James Ellroy's alternative history books "American Tabloid: A Novel" and its sequel "The Cold Six Thousand" are being eyed for a potential adaptation at the pay channel. Said project, which may be a series or mini-series, follows three men and their shifting alliances with the CIA, the Mafia and the Kennedys in a very different 1960s. J. Edgar Hoover, Howard Hughes, Jimmy Hoffa, the Kennedy clan and Frank Sinatra are among the historical figures featured. Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman's Playtone is producing the effort with Kirk Ellis ("John Adams") set to pen the adaptation. All three then will serve as executive producers.

BRIAN BURNS/ED BURNS PROJECTS (Various) - Brothers/filmmakers Brian Burns ("Entourage") and Ed Burns ("The Brothers McMullen") have set up a pair of drama projects at CBS - an ensemble about young arson investigators at the New York City Fire Department and a psychological thriller whose premise is being kept under wraps. Both hours are untitled and set up at CBS Paramount Network Television. Brian Burns also has a comedy at HBO inspired by Dan Kennedy's "Rock On: An Office Power Ballad," about a slacker trading his lifestyle for a 9-to-5 job at a major record label. Kennedy himself will serve as a co-executive producer on the half-hour with former HBO executive Sarah Condon also executive producing.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (CBS) - "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" correspondent Jason Jones is set to guest star on the veteran comedy. He'll play the ex of Stella Zinman (Sarah Chalke) and father of her son in an upcoming episode. No other details were given about his appearance.

TOUGH JUSTICE WITH JUDGE MARIAN SHELTON (Syndication, New!) - A. Smith & Co. has inked a talent holding deal with Marian Shelton to develop a syndicated project with the "tough and no-holds-barred" New York-based judge. Currently being pitched to syndicators, the effort will focus on civil, family and relationship disputes. Shelton was appointed by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 1998 and has served as a Bronx Family Court judge for 10 years, handling more than 40,000 cases with only a handful of appellate reversals.
