DISCOVERY AND PARTNERS IGNITE CHANGE FOR GLOBAL TELEVISION EVENT, "RACING EXTINCTION"
RACING EXTINCTION Premieres Globally December 2 at 9PM on Discovery
(New York, NY) Discovery is joined by world-renowned organizations to help ignite a movement of environmental change, ahead of the network's December 2nd global premiere of RACING EXTINCTION at 9PM. From Academy Award-winning director, Louie Psihoyos and the team behind THE COVE, this groundbreaking documentary examines biodiversity loss, its effect on humanity, and the solutions that inspire hope for a more sustainable future.
Inspired by the film's message and as a part of Discovery's #StartWith1Thing initiative, Discovery is partnering with numerous organizations to help make a positive global impact on the environment. This film serves as a voice to thousands of species teetering on the edge of extinction. This impassioned collective of organizations will work in-step with Discovery to not only bring attention to the plight of endangered species but ignite a movement to save them.
Oceana is the largest international advocacy group working solely to protect the world's oceans. Using science-based campaigns, they seek to win policy victories to make our oceans more biodiverse and abundant. Oceana victories helped to protect more than 1.2 million square miles of ocean and innumerable sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and other sea creatures. For RACING EXTINCTION, Oceana created a petition on Change.org urging President Obama and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to take urgent action to save sea turtles, thousands of which die each year as non-targeted catch in US fisheries. The Sierra Club is America's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization, with more than 2.4 million members and supporters. In addition to helping people from all backgrounds explore nature and our outdoor heritage, the Sierra Club works to promote clean energy, safeguard the health of our communities, protect wildlife, and preserve our remaining wild places through grassroots activism, public education, lobbying, and legal action. For RACING EXTINCTION, they are highlighting the importance of protecting America's Arctic. America's Arctic is facing a crisis -- from the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas to the tundra of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, this area is under increasing threat from oil drilling and the effects of climate change. Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all native animals and plants in their natural communities, a key issue addressed in RACING EXTINCTION. With more than 1.2 million members and activists, Defenders of Wildlife is a leading advocate for innovative solutions to safeguard our wildlife heritage for generations to come. For RACING EXTINCTION, Defenders of Wildlife has developed a series of petitions and pledges that people can take to protect wildlife throughout North America. RACING EXTINCTION also teaches that conservation requires change to benefit both nature and the people who rely on it. For more than 25 years, Rare has empowered local communities in over 50 countries to shift from being resource users to environmental stewards. Rare trains local leaders to lead this change, leaving a legacy of increased capacity and a sense of ownership, responsibility and pride in conservation. Great conservation solutions abound. Empowering communities to adopt them is Rare. (http://www.rare.org/en-spark-movement?utm_source=racingextinction.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=racing-extinction)
The Humane Society International is one of the only international animal protection organizations in the world working to protect all animals - including animals in laboratories, farm animals, companion animals, and wildlife - and our record of achievement demonstrates our dedication and effectiveness. RACING EXTINCTION highlights the multi-billion-dollar illegal wildlife trade industry that threatens the survival of many species and results in the mistreatment or death of countless animals every year. HIS encourages consumers to be compassionate shoppers and avoid purchasing items like ivory trinkets, turtle shell products and exotic leathers, and to avoid attractions that keep animals captive in inhumane conditions. Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics is committed to protecting people, animals and the planet through ethical buying, reduced and recycled packaging and fighting against animal testing. Lush will be providing social support to spread the word on the film in addition to blog posts, dedicated emails and random acts of kindness to thank those for taking part using the #StartWith1Thing hashtag.
Hungry Shark Evolution, the Ubisoft game that allows consumers to experience life as a shark in the ultimate test of survival, will include in-game interstitial artwork supporting Oceana's #StartWith1Thing focus, saving the sea turtles, over the month of December.
Additional partners will #StartWith1Thing and help spread the word on RACING EXTINCTION. Ben & Jerry's has a long history of fighting for climate justice, mobilizing the grassroots, and finding ways to reduce the carbon footprint of their business. John Paul Mitchell Systems was the first professional beauty company to announce they don't conduct or endorse animal testing. They continue to stay dedicated to saving our planet through planting trees, protecting animals and preserving natural resources.
These partnerships teach that each and every one of us across the globe to make small changes in our lives that will have a huge impact on the world. More information on these partnerships and how to make small changes can be found at http://racingextinction.com/StartWith1Thing.
