Development Update: Tuesday, February 1
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

BELATED (FX) - Ellie Taylor, Kaden Kearney, Amir Bageria and EaeMya ThynGi are set to star opposite Kal Penn in the comedy pilot, which follows "an unexpected intergenerational friendship between Sachin (Penn), a recently out man in his 40s, and Clay (Kearney), a 17-year-old trans teen, as Sachin and his ex-wife (Taylor) and children (Bageria and ThynGi) attempt to find their new normal." No other character details were given. (Deadline.com)
BILLY SUMMERS (New!) - J.J. Abrams, Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are set to team for the latest Stephen King adaptation, about "a hitman who is looking to retire and takes one last highly lucrative job to feather his nest." The project, from the Warner Bros. Television-based Bad Robot Productions, is expected to begin the network and streaming rounds shortly. (Deadline.com)
CRIMINAL MINDS (REBOOT SERIES) (Paramount+) - The proposed reboot of the veteran drama remains in development at the streamer. (Deadline.com)
EQUALIZER, THE (CBS) - Jada Pinkett Smith will drop by an upcoming episode as Jessie Cook, "a savant-level thief with a photographic memory. Though she's brilliant and the best at what she does, she's also devious, unpredictable and amoral. Briefly recruited by the CIA for her skills, Jessie and McCall once worked a mission together back in the day, and though the two get along like oil and water, they're a whole lot of fun to watch." (Deadline.com)
FLASHDANCE (Paramount+) - Writer/director Justin Simien has signed onto the proposed TV series incarnation. He'll presumably succeed writer Tracy McMillan and director Angela Robinson, who were originally attached. (Deadline.com)
GURU NATION (Paramount+, New!) - Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are looking to re-team for a new docu-style comedy at the streamer in which the pair play "rival cult gurus manipulating the minds of their deluded followers." Paramount Television Studios is behind the project with co-creators Bob Odenkirk, David Cross and Bill Odenkirk; director Jason Woliner; and Marc Provissiero, Naomi Odenkirk and Tim Sarkes serving as executive producers. (Deadline.com)
QUEER AS FOLK (Peacock) - Nyle DiMarco is bound for the reboot series as "a charming grad student." No other details were given. (TVLine.com)
STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY (Paramount+, New!) - Gaia Violo is reportedly spearheading the latest installment in the franchise: "Sharing a name with the late 1990s video game, the series is set among the college of cadets mentored for leadership roles in the United Federation of Planets space force." CBS Studios and Secret Hideout are as usual behind the project with Alex Kurtzman also among the executive producers. The proposed series would follow the long-in-the-works Section 31 spin-off starring Michelle Yeoh, which remains in development. (Deadline.com)
UNTITLED KIEFER SUTHERLAND ESPIONAGE DRAMA (Paramount+) - The Kiefer Sutherland-led drama has scored an official moniker: "Rabbit Hole." Sutherland plays private espionage operative James Weir, who finds himself in the midst of a battle over the preservation of democracy in a world at odds with misinformation, behavioral manipulation, the surveillance state and the interests that control these extraordinary powers. Production is set to begin soon for a fall launch. Sutherland, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, Charlie Gogolak, Suzan Bymel and Hunt Baldwin are executive producing for CBS Studios. (Deadline.com)
URBAN COWBOY (Paramount+, New!) - James Ponsoldt and Benjamin Percy are the latest looking to bring the 1980 film to the small screen, this time at the streamer, which "followed the love-hate relationship between Buford Uan "Bud" Davis (John Travolta) and Sissy (DebraWinger) and is centered at Gilley's Club, a large honky tonk in Texas. The series will go "deeper" into Bud's journey from farm to the big city in 1980s Houston and will feature music from that time and place." Paramount Television Studios is behind the project with Ponsoldt attached to direct from a script by the duo. FOX previously mounted a TV take in 2015 with Alfonso Herrera and Nathalie Kelley in the lead roles. (Deadline.com)
WILL TRENT (ABC, New!) - Liz Heldens and Dan Thomsen have scored a cast-contingent pilot order from the Alphabet for a new drama based on Karin Slaughter's bestselling book series. The project "revolves around Special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, who was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming of age in Atlanta's overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one feels as abandoned as he was, Trent has the highest clearance rate in the GBI." All three will executive produce for 20th Television. (Deadline.com)
