Las Muertas, The First Series From Luis Estrada, Starts Production in Churubusco Studios

Netflix announced the start of production of Las Muertas, a limited series based on the namesake novel by Jorge Ibargüengoitia, created and directed by Luis Estrada, and produced by Mezcala Films. In the style of a journalistic reportage, the series tells the story of pimping sisters María del Jesús and Delfina González Valenzuela, aka "the Poquianchis" (or the Baladro sisters in the book). Their case shocked Mexico in the 1960s and made them part of our country's great dark legend.

Las Muertas draws a bridge between Ibargüengoitia's vision -as one of the most important writers in Latin American literature- and Luis Estrada's black humor and particular style, as he takes on directing a series for the first time.

"To be able to breath life into Jorge Ibargüengoitia's work and to do so with Luis Estrada's perspective and fearlessness, gives us enormous satisfaction. The ambition, force and respect with which Luis and his team are facing this challenge are impressive", said Francisco Ramos.

The cast includes Arcelia Ramirez (Arcangela Baladro), Paulina Gaitán (Serafina Baladro), Joaquín Cosío (Captain Bedoya) and Alfonso Herrera (Simón Corona). The series began shooting in Mexico City's Churubusco Studios and will also film on location in San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato and Veracruz.

Luis Estrada -director of such films like ¡Que Viva México! and La dictadura perfecta- ventures into this project joined by producer Sandra Solares and cinematographer Alberto Anaya Adalid "Mándaro". Luis Estrada, Jaime Sampietro y Rodrigo Santos are the screenwriters, with Salvador Parra in production design, and Mariana Rodríguez in editing.

"When I first read Las muertas at the age of 15, my first thought was 'I want to make this movie'. Now, together with Netflix, it is becoming a reality as a series. What Jorge Ibargüengoitia had written was a script waiting to be filmed", mentioned Luis Estrada.

Las Muertas arrives in 2025, only on Netflix.
