What starts as a whirlwind romance and Vegas wedding spirals into a bitter custody battle marked by allegations of abuse and parental alienation. From the creators of the Emmy(R)-nominated documentary "Take Care of Maya," the new two-part docuseries "The Nightmare Upstairs: What Happened to Ty and Bryn?" begins streaming May 19 on Hulu and on Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S. The series draws on never-before-seen archives, police interviews and court records to follow a Utah family pushed to the brink, including intimate footage from both sides of a fractured family, offering an unprecedented look at what unfolded behind closed doors. Facing a court order that could send them to a controversial reunification program and the possibility of being forced to live with their father, whom they allege abused them - an allegation the father denies - siblings Ty and Bryn barricade themselves for months, livestreaming the standoff and igniting a viral national reckoning.
The young siblings' protest goes viral on TikTok, as their mother denies allegations of parental alienation, thrusting their family's crisis into the national spotlight. After 54 days in the barricade and livestreaming nonstop to tens of thousands, the judge reevaluates their custody case, allowing rare cameras inside the courtroom. As Ty and Bryn's fate hangs in the balance, their father does something unexpected that forever changes everyone's lives.
"The Nightmare Upstairs: What Happened to Ty and Bryn?" is produced for Hulu by Wise Fool, Herzog & Co., and ABC News Studios. Henry Roosevelt, Caitlin Keating, and Rylan Soref serve as executive producers for Wise Fool, with Roosevelt and Keating also directing. Mark Herzog and Katie Doering are executive producers for Herzog & Co. Claire Weinraub is executive producer, and David Sloan is senior executive producer for ABC News Studios.
