WEEK No. 20:

During the week of February 2, 2009, ABC outpaced NBC by strong margins in Total Viewers (+11% - 7.8 million vs. 7.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+22% - 2.8/8 vs. 2.3/6) and finished No. 2 to Fox for the week among Adults 18-34, beating out a "Grammy"-boosted CBS by 9% (2.5/8 vs. 2.3/7). The Net also held second to Fox for the week among Women 18-34 (3.3/9) and Women 18-49 (3.7/9-tie).

ABC's delivery surged from the prior week by 2.0 million viewers (7.8 million vs. 5.8 million) and by 33% in Adults 18-49 (2.8/8 vs. 2.1/5). ABC's audience is growing in 2009, posting across-the-board gains in Total Viewers and key Adults over the same point in 2008 (5 weeks vs. 5 weeks): Total Viewers +3% (7.6 million vs. 7.4 million), Adults 18-34 +20% (2.4/7 vs. 2.0/6), Adults 18-49 + 8% (2.7/7 vs. 2.5/6) and Adults 25-54 +3% (3.1/7 vs. 3.0/7).

Rankings: ABC aired 4 of the week's Top 10 TV shows in Adults 18-49, including the No. 1 scripted program with "Grey's Anatomy" and the No. 1 10 o'clock series on any night with "Private Practice": "Grey's Anatomy" No. 4 (No. 1 scripted series), "Private Practice" No. 7 (No. 1 10 o'clock show), "Desperate Housewives" No. 9 and "Lost" No. 10. ABC's "The Bachelor," which is delivering the franchise's best results in years (best in 5 years in Total Viewers and in 3 years in Adults 18-49), finished No. 15 for the week in Adults 18-49, No. 12 in Adults 18-34 and No. 6 in Women 18-34.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 29% currently, from 22% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Monday

Improving on the prior week's numbers in both viewers (9.6 million vs. 9.4 million) and young adults (3.7/9 vs. 3.6/9) for the 3rd consecutive week, ABC's Monday lineup hit its highest Adults 18-49 performance since premiere Monday nearly 5 months ago since 9/22/08. Additionally, the Net delivered in its strongest Monday ratings in Adults 18-34 (3.7/9) and Women 18-34 (5.3/13) in 10 months since 3/17/08. In fact, "The Bachelor" has built on the previous week's performance on every telecast since its season premiere. In addition, "The Bachelor" attracted its largest non-finale audience in over 4-1/2 years and strongest Adults 18-49 rating in nearly 3 years since 5/12/04 and 2/13/06, respectively.

The unscripted series led the time-slot across all key Women demos for the second week in a row: Women 18-34 (6.0/14), Women 18-49 (6.0/13) and Women 25-54 (6.0/13).

"The Bachelor" stood as Monday's No. 1 TV program among Women 18-34 and Women 18-49 (tie), qualifying as the top program among Women 18-34 in all 5 of its telecasts this season.

"True Beauty" took second in the hour in the key young adult sales demo to CBS' "C.S.I.: Miami," while leading the 10 o'clock hour among Women 18-34 (3.8/10). "True Beauty" has won its hour among Women 18-34 in all 5 of its airings.

"True Beauty" outperformed the season premiere of NBC's "Medium" among Adults 18-49 (3.0/8 vs. 2.9/7) and Adults 18-34 (2.8/8 vs. 2.0/5).

"Lost" (9:00-10:02 p.m.)

Continuing to exhibit its appointment-television status, "Lost" catapulted from its lead-in by 6.3 million viewers and by 176% in young adults to hold the No. 1 position in the 9 o'clock hour among Adults 18-49 (tied w/ "Lie to Me") and register as Wednesday's No. 1 scripted TV show for the 3rd straight week in the key young adult sales demo.
