ABC Continues to Grow Year to Year on Wednesday Night

Some early info on ABC's Wednesday, ahead of the regular press release.

Up against Fox with a 90-minute Idol leading into the comedy Breaking In, ABC's 3-hour comedy block ranked #2 on Wednesday night in Adults 18-49. ABC was up over the same Wednesday last year in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, building its overall audience year over year for the 16th time in the last 18 weeks.

Opposite the first hour of Fox's American Idol and CBS' Survivor: Redemption Island at 8pm, ABC's The Middle jumped over NBC's original Minute to Win It, more than doubling the NBC game show's numbers in viewers (+126%) and young adults (+125%). The Middle gained 11% week to week in Total Viewers.

Building week to week in viewers (+8%) and young adults (+7%), ABC's freshman Better with You once again outperformed NBC's Minute to Win It by substantial margins at 8:30pm, outrunning the NBC game show by 1.9 million viewers and by a best-ever 100% in Adults 18-49. A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 40% currently, from 36% at the same point in 2010. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
