Thursday's Broadcast Ratings: "American Idol" Tops Second Night in a Row

Here are the highlights of the 14 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks last night (1/16/14):

Night two of the "American Idol" (13.178 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 3.8, #1) premiere kept FOX (13.178 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 3.8, #1) in front on Thursday.

CBS (7.220 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.5, #2) then claimed the silver with its all-repeat lineup of "The Big Bang Theory" (11.891 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.9, #2), "The Millers" (7.943 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.9, #3), "The Crazy Ones" (5.325 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T4), "Two and a Half Men" (5.228 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T4) and "Elementary" (6.465 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.0, #10).

Next up was ABC (3.347 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T3) with a new "The Taste" (3.236 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 0.9, #11) followed by a repeat of "Shark Tank" (3.568 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T4).

Next up was NBC (3.144 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T3) with fresh installments of "Community" (3.165 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 1.1, #9), "Parks & Recreation" (3.083 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T4), "Sean Saves the World" (2.665 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 0.8, #12), "The Michael J. Fox Show" (2.013 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 0.6, #13) and "Parenthood" (3.968 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T4).

And finally, The CW (1.955 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.4, #5) closed out the night with its presentation of "The 19th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards" (1.955 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.4, #14). In the netlet's target demo (women 18-34), the special delivered a 0.5 rating.

· In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 0.8/4; "Late Show," 0.6/3; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.7/3.

· From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.2/4 in metered-market households and a 0.4/2 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

· From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (1.5/5 in metered-market households) beat CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.1/4). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.6/4 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.3/2).

· At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.8/3 in metered-market households and a 0.3/3 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.


Here are the highlights of the 15 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks one year ago (1/17/13):

FOX (16.185 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 5.6, #1) was the top draw on Thursday thanks to night two of the "American Idol" (16.185 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 5.6, #1) premiere.

ABC (7.211 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 2.2, #2) then claimed a distant second place with its mix of "Last Resort" (5.010 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 1.0, #14), "Grey's Anatomy" (8.675 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 2.9, #3) and "Scandal" (7.949 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 2.6, #4).

Next up was CBS (8.976 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.9, #3) and its all-repeat lineup of "The Big Bang Theory" (11.896 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 3.3, #2), "Two and a Half Men" (9.132 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 2.4, #5), "Person of Interest" (9.364 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.6, #8) and "Elementary" (7.049 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.4, #T9).

Meanwhile, NBC (3.890 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.5, #4) offered up originals from "30 Rock" (3.496 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 1.3, #11), "Parks & Recreation" (3.888 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.9, #7), "The Office" (4.152 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 2.1, #6), "1600 Penn" (3.040 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T12) and "Rock Center With Brian Williams" (4.383 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T12).

And finally, the return of "The Vampire Diaries" (2.909 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 1.4, #T9) lead into a rebroadcast of "The Carrie Diaries" (1.154 million viewers, #15; adults 18-49: 0.5, #15) on The CW (2.031 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.9, #5). In the netlet's target demo (women 18-34), "Diaries" delivered a 2.2 rating at 8:00/7:00c and "Beast" a 0.7 rating at 9:00/8:00c.
