By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

CAN OPENERS (CBS) - Omar Gooding (Showtime's "Barbershop") has joined the cast of the drama pilot, about a brain surgeon (Lauren Lee Smith) who fights to survive in the competitive boys club that is the seven-year neurosurgical residency. He'll play Dr. Darryl Childress, a sixth-year resident suffering from burnout. Elle Johnson is behind the project, which is set up at the Sony Pictures Television-based Apostle Productions.

NBC ORIGINAL SERIES (NBC) - Various reports over the weekend have indicated "Kings," "Knight Rider," "My Own Worst Enemy" and "The Philanthropist" will be among the dramatic newcomers to make the Peacock's 2008-09 season schedule. The network plans to unveil its year-round schedule on Wednesday as part of its upfront presentation to the advertising community. Of the quartet, only "Rider" has actually filmed a pilot (broadcast last month) while the remaining trio will be ordered directly to series. As for specifics: "Enemy," from Jason Smilovic, stars Christian Slater as a suburban dad who learns that his alter ego is a spy; "Kings," from Michael Green, stars Christopher Egan as a pure-hearted young warrior who joins the court of the charismatic and authoritative King Silas (Ian McShane); and Tom Fontana's "Philanthropist" revolves around a rebel billionaire who uses his money, connections and power to help people in need - no matter the risks. Interestingly enough, all four projects are from NBC sibling Universal Media Studios.

THE UNITED STATES OF TARA (Showtime) - Keir Gilchrist ("The Winner") and newcomer Portia Doubleday have both been cast in the Toni Collette-led comedy pilot, about a wife and mother with multiple-personality syndrome. They'll play her two teenage children. John Corbet also stars in the half-hour, which has also added Alexa Junge as an executive producer. She'll then serve as the project's showrunner should it move forward to series where she'll work alongside Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and creator Diablo Cody. DreamWorks Television is producing.
