MR. MERCEDES (DirecTV, New!) - Writer David E. Kelley, director Jack Bender and Sonar Entertainment have scored a 10-episode straight-to-series order for a small screen take on Stephen King's novel "Mr. Mercedes." Brendan Gleeson and Anton Yelchin are already attached to star in the project, due in 2018, about "a demented killer who taunts a retired police detective with a series of lurid letters and emails, forcing the ex-cop to undertake a private, and potentially felonious, crusade to bring the killer to justice before he can strike again. Gleeson will play Detective Bill Hodges, a retired cop who is driven out of retirement after an old nemesis reappears, while Yelchin will portray Brady Hartsfield, a mentally deranged ice cream truck driver and IT worker for Cyber Patrol (aka Geek Squad) who is secretly the Mercedes Killer." Also serving as executive producers are Temple Hill Entertainment's Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey; Audience Network's Christopher Long and Bart Peters; and Sonar's Jenna Glazier and Tom Patricia. UNTITLED A. SMITH & CO. PROJECT (Spike TV, New!) - A. Smith & Co. Productions is developing a new hourlong game show at the cable channel in which "parents and their adult children compete to win a large cash prize while learning cringe-worthy truths about their next of kin." The project is detailed as "looking good for a series order." No other auspices were given. (Deadline.com)
AND IN OTHER NEWS... - CBS has ordered a new pilot for its multi-camera comedy "Superior Donuts" with co-stars Jermaine Fowler (now an executive producer), Maz Jobrani and David Koechner returning and Brian d'Arcy James's role being recast (Deadline.com); Endemol Shine North America is developing video game "Mirror's Edge" as a TV series (Deadline.com); Jeffery Self is set to host "Scream After Dark," a special aftershow following Monday's "Scream" season premiere (Deadline.com); Brian Geraghty's Sean Roman has confirmed his exit from "Chicago PD" (Deadline.com); "NCIS" and "NCIS: New Orleans" executive producer Gary Glasberg has inked a three-year overall deal extension with CBS Television Studios (Deadline.com);
Ben Cole has joined the cast of Netflix's "Sense8" as Todd, "a new sensate who longs to be normal, rejecting the gifts he's been born with" (Deadline.com); Alexander DiPersia has scored an arc on Amazon's "Good Girls Revolt" as Noah Binowitz, "Sam's (Daniel Eric Gold) old school buddy who is back Stateside after serving two tours in Vietnam" (Deadline.com); and Phillip Noyce has bowed out from HBO's Andrew Jackson mini-series "American Lion," "over disagreements about how the project depicts some of the more unflattering aspects of the seventh president's policies" (THR.com).
