REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL (HBO) - The investigative sports series will end with its current season after nearly 30 years. "Since Day 1 at Real Sports, we've consistently tried to look beyond the scoreboard and focus instead on the many societal issues inherent in the world of sports," host Bryant Gumbel said. "In the process we've had the opportunity to tell complex stories about race, gender, class, opportunity and so much more. Being able to do so at HBO for almost 3 decades has been very gratifying. WINTER PALACE (Netflix, New!) - The streamer has commissioned an eight-part series "centred around ambitious proprietor Andre Morel, who, in 1899, envisions a five-star luxury hotel that will remain open throughout winter. He convinces wealthy aristo Lord Fairfax to come on board, and the two find themselves battling demanding clientele, rebellious staff and a hostile climate to make their dream a reality." Writer Lindsay Shapero and director Pierre Monnard are behind the project, a co-production with Swiss network RTS. Jean-Marc Fröhle's Point Productions and Oble Studios are co-producing. Production begins next month in the Swiss Alps for a late 2024 release. (Variety.com, 9/4)
