WEEK No. 18:
During the week of January 17, 2011, ABC's "Modern Family" finished as the No. 1 regular scripted program in Adults 18-49, despite competing head to head against Fox's "American Idol" premiere on Wednesday. In fact the Network had a number of standout performance against "Idol." Opposite Wednesday's 2-hour "Idol" opener, ABC's "The Middle" and "Modern Family" each marked their highest-ever numbers against any telecast of the Fox program. Opposite "Idol's" Thursday premiere from 8:00-9:00 p.m., Winter "Wipeout" produced big year-over-year growth for ABC with the Net's top results in 6 years against the opening hour of any "American Idol" Night 2 premiere - since "Lost" on 1/19/05. With "Primetime: What Would You Do? and "20/20" on Friday night, ABC claimed TV's Top 2 newsmagazine telecasts for the week in both Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 39% currently, from 35% at the same point in 2010. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
