ABC's "Life on Mars" Takes Second in the 10 O'clock Hour with Adults 18-34

Thursday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.) ABC earned second place on Thursday in Total Viewers (10.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.7/10). The Network ranked No. 1 on the evening among Adults 18-34 (3.3/10) and key Women: W18-49 (5.4/13) and W18-34 (5.0/14). In fact it was the Net's 4th week in a row to lead the night with Women 18-34.

"Ugly Betty" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

ABC's "Ugly Betty" took second place at 9:00 p.m. in Total Viewers (8.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.6/8), outdrawing NBC's comedies by almost 2 million viewers ("My Name is Earl"/"Kath & Kim" = 6.3 million & 2.5/7 in AD18-49). Defeating its nearest competition in the hour by 33% in Women 18-34 (3.6/11 vs. 2.7/8 CBS' "Survivor: Gabon"), "Betty" held the No. 1 position in its time period for the 4th consecutive week among young women.

Hitting its highest ratings since its premiere 3 weeks ago, "Betty" was up week to week in Adults 25-54 (3.2/8 vs. 3.1/8) and Women 25-54 (4.6/11 vs. 4.5/11).

"Grey's Anatomy" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

Growing week to week and re-emerging as Thursday's No. 1 TV program in Adults 18-49, ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" (5.8/14) defeated CBS' "C.S.I." in the 9 o'clock hour by 14% in the key young adult sales demo (5.1/13) and NBC's "Office"/"SNL Weekend Update" combo by 41% (4.1/10). The ABC medical drama also dominated the hour by 30% in Adults 18-34 over second-place NBC (5.6/13 vs. 4.3/12). "Grey's" topped third-place "C.S.I." by 75% in Adults 18-34 (5.6/13 vs. 3.2/9).

In addition to registering as Thursday's top show in Adults 18-49, "Grey's" was also the evening's No. 1 television program with Adults 18-34 and across all key Women demographics (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

"Grey's" was up week to week by 4% in Adults 18-49 (5.8/14 vs. 5.6/13) and by 6% in Adults 18-49 (5.6/16 vs. 5.3/14).

"Life on Mars" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

ABC's freshman drama, "Life on Mars," took second place during the 10 o'clock hour among Adults 18-34 (2.1/6) and Women 18-34 (2.9/8).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 20% at the same point in 2007. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
