WEEK No. 2:

Despite having "Grey's Anatomy" preempted for the VP Debate on Thursday, ABC earned second place for the week in Total Viewers (9.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.8/8-tie). The Net ranked No. 1 for the 2nd week in a row with Women 18-34 (2.8/8) and Women 18-49 (3.5/9-tie).

Rankings: On an atypical week which included the VP Debate on Thursday, ABC aired 5 of the week's Top 20 TV programs in Adults 18-49, including the No. 1 show with "Desperate Housewives": "Desperate Housewives" No. 1, "Dancing with the Stars" No. 8, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" No. 15, "Brothers & Sisters" No. 17 and "DWTS Results" No. 19. The Net claimed 3 of the Top 5 most-watched television shows, delivering the No. 1 show overall with "DWTS": "Dancing with the Stars" No. 1, "Desperate Housewives" No. 4 and "DWTS Results" No. 5. In fact it was the 2nd week in a row for ABC to claim the No. 1 TV programs in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 20% at the same point in 2007. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
