Live + 7 Day Ratings: Several ABC Series Score Big Playback Gains in the First Complete Week of the New Year

Live + 7 Day Ratings for the week of 1/6/14 (Week #16):

Please note: Nashville was in repeats, Grey's and Scandal are currently on hiatus and Once Upon a Time was pre-empted for a Bachelor special.

Based on Nielsen's TV playback data for original programming, ABC shot up 36% over its Live + Same Day Adult 18-49 rating (to deliver a 1.9 in the final Live + 7 Day ratings), marking the biggest percentage gain among the broadcast networks during the week.

ABC claimed 2 of the week's 5 biggest broadcast gainers in TV playback among Adults 18-49, with Modern Family (+2.1 rating points) - #2 and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (+1.4 rating points) - #5, and in Total Viewers, with Modern Family (+4.5 million) - #4 and Castle (+4.5 million) - #5.

Castle returned to originals for the first time in 6 weeks and improved its L+SD Adult 18-49 rating by 71% (growing to a 2.9 rating in L+7) - its 2nd-largest increase this season.

On its first original telecast in 4 weeks, Last Man Standing matched its highest playback increase this season, growing 7-tenths of a rating point over its L+SD number to tie a season high with Adults 18-49 (2.2 rating) in the final L+7 ratings.

Returning to originals for the first time in 1 month, Modern Family matched its 2nd-best increase this season (+2.1 rating points) in the Adult 18-49 demo.

The first original telecast of Trophy Wife in 4 weeks catapulted 45% over its L+SD Adult 18-49 rating - a season-best build for the freshman ABC sitcom.

In the final Live + 7 Day ratings, S.H.I.E.L.D. shot up to the week's Top 10 highest-rated broadcast series in Adults 18-49 (3.6 rating), ranking #6 versus #12 in the initial Live + Same Day numbers. In addition, Modern Family (5.6 rating) climbed up to #2 (from #3) in the final L+7 rankings. During the week, ABC claimed the #1 series among Adults 18-49 on Monday (The Bachelor - 3.3), Wednesday (Modern Family - 5.6) and Friday (Shark Tank - 2.6) in the L+7 rankings.

Season-to-Date TV Playback (9/23/13-1/12/14):

Based on TV playback data for the 2013-14 season, ABC claims the most Top 10 playback gainers among Adults 18-49 of any broadcast network: Modern Family (+2.0 rating points), Grey's Anatomy (+1.8 rating points), Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (+1.7 rating points), Scandal (+1.5 rating points) and Castle (+1.3 rating points). ABC owns 4 of the 10 biggest overall gainers on the broadcast networks (tied with CBS): Castle (+4.4 million), Modern Family (+4.2 million), Grey's (+4.0 million) and Scandal (+3.9 million).

Nearly all of ABC's key returning series are seeing bigger percentage gains among Adults 18-49 from L+SD to L+7 this year than last: Castle (+65% vs. +50%), Dancing with the Stars (+20% vs. +18%), Grey's Anatomy (+64% vs. +52%), Last Man Standing (+46% vs. +40%), Modern Family (+54% vs. +46%), Nashville (+75% vs. +55%), The Neighbors (+30% vs. +21%), Once Upon a Time (+55% vs. +44%), Revenge (+59% vs. +46%), Scandal (+48% vs. +41%) and Shark Tank (+37% vs. +21%).

· Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is Tuesday's #1 TV show this season with Adults 18-49 based on original telecasts (tied with NBC's The Voice), beating CBS' NCIS by 10% (4.5 rating vs. 4.1 rating). In fact, based on first-run telecasts in the L+7 Adult 18-49 ratings, ABC claims the season's #1 TV show on Tuesday (S.H.I.E.L.D. - 4.5 rating), the #1 show on Wednesday (Modern Family - 5.7), the #2 show on Thursday (Grey's and Scandal tie - 4.6) and the #2 show on Friday (with Shark Tank within 1-tenth of a rating point of NBC's Grimm - 2.6 vs. 2.7).

· Modern Family is the season's #2 scripted series among Adults 18-49 on the broadcast networks (5.7 rating).

· ABC's Grey's Anatomy and Scandal both tie as the 2nd-highest-rated broadcast drama of the season among Adults 18-49 (4.6 rating).
